Bone Hormone: A Startling Discovery For Diabetes Treatment

While it is true that elevated blood sugar is the defining feature of diabetes, the reasons for abnormal sugar seem to differ tremendously from person to person. It is in understanding exactly what signals are involved that raises the hope of providing the right care for each person each day, rather than giving everyone the same drug.

Keywords:
infections, inflammation

A startling new discovery about a hormone released from the bone is significantly changing scientists’ understanding of diabetes and giving new clues about how to deal with the “Big D.” Considered to be the fifth leading killer of Americans, diabetes is a disease in which the body’s failure to regulate blood sugar (glucose) can lead to serious and even fatal complications. The regulation of glucose entails the body’s monitoring of how much sugar is present in a person’s blood; how much is taken up by cells for fuel; and how much is released from energy stores. These processes are performed by the pancreas, the liver, muscles, and fat. Other specific types of diabetes, which may account for 1% to 2% of all diagnosed cases, result from specific genetic syndromes, surgery, drugs, malnutrition, infections, and other illnesses.
However, new research suggests that the issue is even more complex than what it seems to be. A hormone from the skeleton may influence how the body handles sugar. There is also an increasing evidence that demonstrates that the signals from the immune system, the brain and the gut play very important roles in controlling glucose and lipid metabolism. These findings are mainly relevant to Type 2 diabetes, the more common kind, which comes during adulthood.
While it is true that having elevated blood sugar is the defining feature of diabetes, the reasons for abnormal sugar tend to be different from one individual to another. It is in understanding exactly what signals are involved that raises the hope of providing the right care for each person each day, rather than giving everyone the same drug.
When researchers from Columbia University Medical Center published the results last summer, scientists were astounded that a hormone released from the bone may help regulate blood glucose. Lead researcher, Dr. Gerard Karsenty, first described the findings at a conference where the assembled scientists appeared to be overwhelmed by the potential implications of the study. It was the first time that the skeleton was actually seen as an endocrine organ, producing hormones that act outside of bone.
In his previous work, he had shown that a hormone produced by fat, called leptin, is an important regulator of bone metabolism. In this work, he tested the idea that if fat regulates bone, bone in essence must regulate fat. His experiment with mice revealed that a previously known substance called osteocalcin, which is produced by bone, acted by sending signals to the fat cells as well as the pancreas. The net effect is to improve how mice secrete and handle insulin, the hormone that helps the body move glucose from the bloodstream into cells of the muscle and liver, where it can be used for energy or stored for future use. Insulin is also important in regulating lipids.
Patients with Type 2 diabetes no longer heed the hormone’s directives due to the cells’ resistance to insulin. Their blood glucose levels surge and production of insulin in the pancreas declines as well. The experiment revealed an increase in osteocalcin which addressed the twin problems of insulin resistance and low insulin production. The mice became more sensitive to insulin and it increased their insulin production, thus bringing their blood sugar down. As a bonus, it also made obese mice less fat.
Should osteocalcin works in humans as well, it can be considered as a “unique new treatment” for Type 2 diabetes. Most current diabetes drugs either raise insulin production or improve insulin sensitivity, but not both. Drugs that increase production tend to make insulin resistance worse. A deficiency in osteocalcin could also turn out to be a cause of Type 2 diabetes.
The immune system is considered to be another cause of glucose regulation. In 2003, researchers from two laboratories found that fat tissue from obese mice contained an abnormally large number of macrophages, immune cells that contribute to inflammation.
Scientists have long suspected that inflammation was somehow related to insulin resistance, which precedes nearly all cases of Type 2 diabetes. In the early 1900s, diabetics were sometimes given high doses of aspirin, which is an anti-inflammatory. Only in the past few years has research into the relationship of obesity, inflammation and insulin resistance become a serious concern.
A number of researchers agree that obesity is accompanied by a state of chronic, low-grade inflammation in which some immune cells are activated, which may be a primary cause of insulin resistance. They also agree that the main type of cell responsible for the inflammation is the macrophage.
Should more research prove the initial findings to be true, there would be certainly greater hope of relief and treatment for diabetics everywhere.

Choosing the Best Wheelchair Lift

Finding the right wheelchair lift for your home or vehicle does not have to be an ordeal.

Keywords:
wheelchair lifts, wheelchair lift, home wheelchair lift

Determining which is the best wheelchair lift can sometimes be confusing. Some things to consider before making your purchase are how you plan to use the lift, and what specifications that you need. You should determine first whether you need a vehicle wheelchair lift or one for your home. Home wheelchair lifts are very beneficial in helping those confined to wheelchairs to enjoy more mobility and independence. They can lift you up flights of stairs, or from a lower level garage to the main level of your home.

Finding the right wheelchair lift for your home simply depends on knowing what you need before you purchase. You should note the weight capacity that you will need, as well as the size of the lift. If you do not have room for a larger model lift, then you will obviously need to skip those and compare pricing and functionality of a smaller, more compact model. Either way, if you do not know exactly what your personal requirements are before you purchase a lift, then you run a large risk of ending up with a lift that will do you no good, or one that you can not use.

Some things to keep in mind when choosing the lift for your home also include choosing the correct material. You need to ensure that the material will not cause any allergic reactions in the person using it. For instance, if you are the one using the lift, and you are allergic to specific materials, be sure to no include lifts made from those materials in your search. You should also keep in mind the operation mechanism itself. If you want a power operated model, or need one for various reasons, then be sure to not include manually operated models in your search.

Which leads us to the search itself. Comparing different prices and different specifications is the absolute best way to find the most optimal wheelchair lift for your home, or for your vehicle. By noting the various models, their function capabilities, their weight capacities, and their pricing ranges, you can make a much more informed decision in the buying process. You should know beforehand exactly what you are looking for. You can then simply skip over models that do not offer the specifications that you need, and compare those that do. Be sure also to research the various manufacturers to ensure that you are purchasing a high quality lift, preferably with a warranty, just in case you need to have repairs done, or in case the lift does not work properly upon installation.

A wheelchair lift is a wonderful thing to add to your home to give you the freedom and independence that you need to do the things that you want in your daily life. Choosing the correct lift is vitally important to retain your freedom and independence. Never buy a lift that you have not researched and make sure that you trust the company that you are purchasing it from.

Binge Eating Disorder affects just about as many men as it does women, even though the stereotype is that eating disorders are thought to be a women’s disorder. This stereotype is incorrect. There are 25 million people that struggle daily with Binge Eating Disorder. Out of that 25 million, you may be surprised to know that 40% are men. According to Wikipedia.com, this means that three women for every two men suffer from Binge Eating Disorder.

There are different reasons as to why men develop Binge Eating Disorder. One cause is if they play or played sports sometime in their life that required them to be thin or to lose a lot of weight for a particular competition, such as a wrestling match or running. Football players and body builders are still at risk, but it is lower since these sports require some meat and muscles in order to be successful. Another reason is that the chosen profession calls for thinness, such as modeling and acting. Men feel a pressure, just as women do, to maintain a level of thinness when they are in the public eye and when they are in looked at.

A man is more at risk for developing Binge Eating Disorder at a older age than a woman does, especially if the man had a tendency to be overweight at a child. This is because growing up a man believes that he needs to be strong and be able to protect not only himself, but also a female. If he is thin, this translates to fragile and he will see himself as not being powerful and not being able to get the things that he wants in life because he is considered weak.

Treatment for men is the same as women; although, men are more reluctant to visit a professional since eating disorders are considered to be female difficulties. The professional will go into detail to find out why the man comforts himself with food. Once the reason why he binges comes to the surface, the professional can give him ideas of how to change his behaviors. Once this happens and once the man feels comfortable with the professional, then the journey to recovery begins.

Clearly binge eating disorder is not only a female disorder, as many males are affected too. Regardless of being male or female, it is important to admit that your relationship with food is not healthy and to seek help on how to make it healthy once again.

Newspapers have reported on the drawbacks of having a diet high in fat. High-fat diet has been linked to high cholesterol and ultimately to heart attacks. Hence, people have started avoiding beef and eggs. But cholesterol is not bad. Our body needs it to protect nerves and build new cells and hormones. It is only when we include foods like pizzas, burgers, ice creams, steaks or any food containing animal product that the problem starts. Excess cholesterol settles along the walls of the arteries and can clog them thus, restricting blood flow. This gives rise to angina, heart attack or stroke. It has also been shown that high cholesterol leads to gallstones. There are two types of cholesterol called good cholesterol or HDL and bad cholesterol or LDL. LDL is the cholesterol that clogs the arteries and should be lower while HDL scours the artery walls and removes the harmful LDL and should be higher.

Doctors recommend reducing and avoiding high-fat diets containing meat, eggs and dairy products. But you can use the following home remedies for treatment:

• Increase the intake of Vitamin E: It is advised to increase your intake of Vitamin E to 400 international units to prevent the oxidation of bad cholesterol where the cholesterol hardens into the arterial plaque thus giving rise to heart attack. It also raises the level of HDL. You can include Vitamin E as dietary sources or include vegetable oils, nuts or grains in your diet.

• Eat your breakfast: People who skip the breakfast have higher cholesterol levels than those who have breakfast everyday. This is because they tend to eat unhealthy foods which are high in fats.

• Eat small meals frequently: Large meals have been shown to release a large amount of insulin, which in turn stimulates the production of the enzymes that increases cholesterol production by the liver. But eating small frequent meals without increasing the total calories will limit the insulin production and thus controls the cholesterol and in turn heart diseases.

• Add Vitamin C to your diet: Though other vitamins and minerals play an important role in the cholesterol production, Vitamin C is the most crucial vitamin for cholesterol control. It increases HDL levels and is very beneficial if you get it from fruits and vegetables, since they have a special fibre called pectin. It surrounds the cholesterol and flushes it out of the digestive system before it gets into the blood. Include fruits like citrus fruits, tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries, apples and spinach which are rich in vitamin C and pectin.

• Increase garlic intake: Taking seven cloves of garlic a day will reduce cholesterol levels significantly. If you cannot stand the normal garlic, then you can opt for odorless garlic pills, which are available in local health stores.

• Skip decaf: Avoid decaffeinated coffee since it has been shown to raise LDL levels. This is because the beans used for decaf are far stronger than the normal beans.

• Munch grapes: Grapes and their products have a compound which lowers cholesterol significantly. So you can increase your intake of grapes, grape juice and wine to decrease your cholesterol level.

• Have grapefruit: Grapefruit contains pectin which reduces cholesterol significantly. Hence, people who consume grapefruits show a marked decline of cholesterol over 7 percent after two months of consumption.

• Eat beans: Lima beans, kidney beans, navy beans, soybeans and other legumes have been shown to lower cholesterol as they have a high amount of pectin. Research has shown that people who consume about 11/2 cup of cooked beans a day have decreased their cholesterol levels by 20 percent within three weeks.

• Splurge on carrots: Carrots have plenty of pectin, the most useful type of fibre for lowering cholesterol. Having about 2 to 3 carrots a day will reduce cholesterol levels by 10 to 20 percent.

Drinking Alcohol Really Does Decreases the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes Among Older Women
It is absurd. For the longest time, we have believed that alcohol has no real benefits. However, recently, a study has found that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol really does decreases the risk of Type 2 Diabetes, and this is especially true among Older Women! There are 20.8 million children and adults in the United States, or 7% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 6.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease.

Recent studies have shown that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol (as compared to drinking too much alcohol or no alcohol at all) can lower the chances of getting type 2 diabetes. However, only a few studies on alcohol and type 2 diabetes have included women, and very few have included older women.

Previous studies on the effects of drinking moderate amounts of alcohol (1-2 drinks) and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes have mostly been done on men or both men and women who were younger than 55 years old. The researchers wanted to study how drinking alcohol affects older women’s (more than 50 years old) chances of developing type 2 diabetes. (see Diabetes Symptoms)

Questionnaires were mailed to the women in the study. The women were asked where they lived and if they had conditions that put them at risk for any other diseases. Waist and hip, height, weight, and blood pressure measurements were taken at the beginning of the study. Diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol were also reported if these conditions were diagnosed by a doctor. The questionnaire asked about how much each woman exercised and how much they ate.

The questionnaire also contained questions about how much alcohol the women drank, how often they drank, and what types of alcohol they drank, both currently and in the past. The researchers sent out two follow-up questionnaires every 3 to 5 years. These questionnaires asked the women whether they developed type 2 diabetes, what year they were diagnosed, who diagnosed them, and whether they were being treated by diet, drugs, and/or insulin.

Conclusion
The researchers found that blood pressure was lower in the women who drank moderately, but it increased in women who drank more. During the study, a total of 760 new cases of diabetes were diagnosed. The research shows, however, that drinking alcohol in moderate amounts did lessen the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This is rather significant piece of news as we can now safely drink our favourite wine and not feel guilty about it!

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes affects about four percent of all pregnant women although it is usually goes away after childbirth. Untreated gestational diabetes can lead to problems for both the mother and the child.

Keywords:
diabetes, diabetes supply, diabetes treatment, diabetes mellitus

This type of diabetes is a temporary form of insulin resistance that usually occurs halfway through a pregnancy. It results from excessive hormone production in the body, or the inability of the pancreas make the additional insulin that is needed during pregnancy in women with no previous history of diabetes. Without enough insulin, sugar builds up in the blood to high levels. This is called hyperglycemia.

Gestational diabetes affects about four percent of all pregnant women although it is usually goes away after childbirth. Untreated gestational diabetes can lead to problems for both the mother and the child. Although insulin does not cross through the placenta to the baby, sugar and other nutrients do.

Extra blood sugar goes through the placenta, giving the baby high blood sugar level. This causes the baby’s pancreas to produce extra insulin to get rid of the blood sugar, which can lead to microsomatia or a fat baby syndrome. Microsomatia develops because extra blood sugar and insulin cause the baby’s body to produce extra fat.

Babies with microsomatia are prone to other health problems including damage to their shoulders during birth. Because of the extra insulin newborns may have very low blood sugar levels at birth and may also have a higher risk of breathing problems.

The treatment of gestational diabetes should start quickly to prevent adverse effects to the mother and the baby. It should aim to keeping blood sugar level equal to those of pregnant women who do not have gestational diabetes. Treatment includes special meal plans and scheduled physical activity as well as daily blood sugar testing, so as to keep it under control.

Change Your Look – Get Contact Lenses Today!

You can now say goodbye to your old glasses and wear contact lens. Many people feel that contact lenses are very inconvenient to wear, and that they might not be as effective as the glasses. But that is not so. Contact lenses serve the same purpose as that of conventional glasses.

You can now say goodbye to your old glasses and wear contact lens. Many people feel that contact lenses are very inconvenient to wear, and that they might not be as effective as the glasses. But that is not so. Contact lenses serve the same purpose as that of conventional glasses. They should be placed in the cornea of your eye. Once you get the hang of it, they are very easy to wear, and unlike glasses, they can be worn anywhere and everywhere. You can even swim wearing them.

Before you get your contact lenses, you should first see an ophthalmologist. Your eyesight may be good, and you may not be wearing glasses, but it is still advisable that you get your eyes examined before going for it, to see if it’s fine for you to wear contacts. Contact lenses need to be fitted properly by an optician first before you do it yourself.

There are various types of contact lenses available, and the most popular ones are the colored contact lenses. Many people go for them to change their eye color. Contact lenses are basically divided into two types:

• Soft contact lenses: These lenses contain from 25% to 79% water. They are easy to adapt and are very comfortable. They need to be replaced every few months.
• Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) contact lenses: These lenses are more durable, but they take longer to adapt compared to soft contacts. They are cheaper, and are said to offer better vision than soft lenses and can be replaced in a couple of years.

Colored contacts:

Colored contact lenses are used by many to change the color of the eyes, as they can change the appearance of your face to some extent. Wearing the right color can do magic. Some people wear them instead of their usual glasses when going to parties or on special occasions. There are 4 types of colored contacts:

1. Visibility tints: This is the light blue or green tint added to the lenses so you can find them easily if you drop them, and also to help you see them better during insertion and removal. This color tint does not affect eye color.
2. Enhancement tints: It is a solid, translucent tint added to the lens to enhance the existing color of your eyes.
3. Opaque color tints: These are solid color tints added to completely change the color of eyes.
4. Light-filtering tints: These lenses are so designed that they enhance only some particular colors like optic yellow, the color of golf balls, tennis balls etc. They are made especially for sports players so that the ball stands out against the background making it easier for the player to focus.

Novelty Contact Lenses

These contact lenses are perfect for any dramatic effect and are very popular during Halloween, so they are called Halloween Lenses. They are special effects contacts, which would go perfectly with your Halloween costume. Novelty contacts are often used in movies, be it the werewolf you saw or the Dracula, or the black witch; all of them would be wearing these lenses. However; they should be worn with caution. Buy them only from a reputable distributor. As they are readily available anywhere, you should be careful, as chances are that these cheap, duplicate lenses may cause severe eye injury.

Safety Tips:

Always follow the manufacturer’s advice about when to discard contact lenses, or else you may be inviting trouble, causing serious eye infection. Never exchange lenses with anybody, as this can transmit harmful bacteria causing infection in the eyes. Never wear contacts unless they are prescribed and monitored by an optician. Follow a good hygiene routine to prevent eye irritation or infection, and always store the lenses in proper commercially prepared sterile solutions.

Keep in mind that because of the way the eye reacts, you could require more frequent replacement of contact lenses than what is recommended.

Diet is a quite important matter for diabetic people. Everything they eat may have a consequence positive or not in their disease evolution. According to researchers from Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, overweight Latino children show signs of beta cell decline, a precursor of type 2 diabetes because they are consuming lots of sugar especially in sugary drinks.

Nowadays, statistics show that nearly one out of four Latino children in the United States is overweight, and the problem appears to be worse over the future. Obesity rates are increasing along with the incidence of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes within overweight teens. Under a researchers’ report published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, high sugar consumption during childhood may play an important role in the development of diabetes in this population.

According to experts in preventive medicine, overweight and poor diet among these children could have disastrous consequences for minority health and the health-care costs for future generations, if they are left untreated.

The research called Study of Latinos at Risk (SOLAR) Diabetes Project is conducted by the research team from the Keck School. This project examined 63 overweight Latino children in Los Angeles from 9 to 13 years old and do not have diabetes.

Beta cells in the pancreas, experts explain, create the hormone insulin in response to sugar from food. Energy is something necessary to cells in the body’s tissues, so they need sugar, or glucose, and insulin helps cells grab and take up glucose in the blood.
